WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?
Mindfulness is the practice of purposefully paying attention to the experience of the present moment without judgement... easier said than done when our brains have a tendency to replay the past and jump to the future, often with regret and worry! However by learning a range of techniques and practicing regularly, mindfulness can help you be present with the ups and downs of everyday life without getting overwhelmed.
In reality, mindfulness is not something new: it’s a practice found in different forms in all the world’s great spiritual traditions. However, in recent years, this practice has been developed into a series of secular techniques that anyone can learn and incorporate into their daily lives.
HOW IS MINDFULNESS TAUGHT?
I teach mindfulness both to individuals and to small groups. The practice is divided into two parts:
-The more formal meditation practices (this might involve focusing on the breath, the body, sounds, smells…)
-Mindfulness for daily life (This is all about getting out of 'autopilot' and being able to live more fully in the present moment…)
HOW CAN MINDFULNESS HELP?
Research shows that mindfulness can have a profound positive effect on both mental and physical wellbeing. Practicing regularly can help you to reduce stress and anxiety, feel more contented, and build resilience. Mindfulness can also be extremely helpful for those suffering from chronic health conditions and chronic pain.
Life will always have its ups and downs but being mindful helps us to take it all in our stride. In the words of Jon Kabat-Zinn: "You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf!"
MY WORK AS A MINDFULNESS TEACHER
I have been an accredited Breathworks mindfulness teacher since 2015. I am trained to teach both Breathworks' 'Mindfulness for Health' and 'Mindfulness for Stress' courses.
